There is an item 2006/07 School Plan stating that the School will respond to current PDP initiatives and to encourage the implementation of PDP as part of programmes. ERDEE will be taking a leading role in co-ordinating a PDP working group this semester

Open Source Portfolio (OSP) 2.0 demo

There is a demo of the current version of OSP at http://demo.osportfolio.org/portal/. This will have relevance for the School this year, as the University hopes to make OSP available for courses and individuals to use. Version 2.1 is forthcoming in the spring, and there is an article about it at http://www.rsmart.com/assets/understandingOSP_Dec2005.pdf.

E-portfolio e-break, 24 October

The e-break was a great success, and provoked some fascinating discussion. My presentation and a recap of the discussion is available at http://www.elearn.malts.ed.ac.uk/issues/news/ebreaks0506/ebreak24oct05.phtml

ISLE and the Scottish ePortfolio Network

I was invited to give a short demonstration of OSP 1.5 at the launch of the Scottish ePortfolio Network on 14 September in Glasgow. The Network is connected to the Individualised Support for Learning through ePortfolios (ISLE) project based at the University of Paisley. The launch day was very interesting, with speakers from schools, further and higher education discussing PDP in different contexts, workshop sessions, and e-portfolio demonstrations. Colleagues from many different institutions and organisations across Scotland attended the day.

ALT-C 2005 conference, Manchester

I attended ALT-C 2005 in Manchester early in September. This year's conference was titled "exploring the frontiers of e-learning - borders, outposts and migration". E-portfolios were discussed in a number of different contexts, and a report of some of these discussions is at http://www.jisc.ac.uk/index.cfm?name=e_portfolio_news080905

We are very pleased to announce that ERDEE has been awarded 9 months of funding from the Principal's E-learning Fund. This is in addition to the 5 months already being funded by the Department of Educational Studies, and means the project will now run until the end of June 2006.

Second Childhood Studies Portfolio introduction session

The second Portfolio introduction session for students on the BA Childhood Studies took place on 17 May. In the first session we'd looked primarily at how to get information into the Portfolio. This session focussed more on how to create and share presentations and how to give and receive comments.

We haven't done any formal evaluation yet, and the students won't start using their Portfolios for course work until September, but they seemed relatively comfortable with the concepts involved, and are getting to grips with the software.

Read more about what the BA CS students are doing in the case study section.

Collaboration with Queen Margaret University College

A few weeks ago I demonstrated the Childhood Studies e-portfolio pilot to a colleague at Queen Margaret University College. QMUC is working on implementing OSP (the software being used for the Childhood Studies portfolio). I will soon be meeting with Susi Peacock, who has particular expertise in flexible and distance learning technology, to discuss further opportunities for collaboration.

OSP Conference in Baltimore

At least two people from the University are going to the OSP conference in Baltimore in a couple of weeks. They'll be looking at OSP version 2.0, which is due to be released soon. Anne-Marie Scott from MIS, who has been working with the current version of OSP for the BA Childhood Studies, is going be particularly interested to find out how the new version can support reflective writing in the form of a weblog (blog).

ELGG roadmap released

Dave Tosh, a PhD student at Edinburgh who is currently researching student motivation and engagement in the e-portfolio process, has been working on an open source 'learning landscape system' called ELGG. ELGG combines features of an e-portfolio, a weblog and a social networking system.
